A few days after the disaster, the residents of Pripyat were forced to leave their homes in a hurry, leaving behind all their personal belongings. After more than thirty years, nothing remains; only pianos remain in this isolated area. For example, this upright piano, left in an apartment on the eighth floor of a block of flats, was photographed by the artist in 2017.
Romain Thiery uses photography and sound recording, drawing on his background as a photographer and amateur pianist. He combines a documentary aesthetic with a poetic and pictorial approach, exploiting natural light and the contrasts between ruins and instrumental nobility. His style emphasizes textures, careful compositions, and the integration of sounds captured on location. Through his works, he evokes a profound melancholy, evoking ephemeral beauty, lost memory, and the poetry of abandonment, while paying homage to the symbolic power of the piano.
