This palace in the Polish countryside was built in the 13th century and converted into a residence in the 17th century. It had many different owners, and in the 19th century it remained uninhabited for several years. At the very end of that same century, a wealthy American purchased the palace as a wedding gift for his daughter and invested in restoring it to its former glory. Abandoned for years following successive looting, only this piano remained… inside. In 2021, the piano disappeared.
Romain Thiery uses photography and sound recording, drawing on his background as a photographer and amateur pianist. He combines a documentary aesthetic with a poetic and pictorial approach, exploiting natural light and the contrasts between ruins and instrumental nobility. His style emphasizes textures, careful compositions, and the integration of sounds captured on location. Through his works, he evokes a profound melancholy, evoking ephemeral beauty, lost memory, and the poetry of abandonment, while paying homage to the symbolic power of the piano.
