About this artwork
In the early 1980’s, dear friends of mine opened a wonderful mid-century furniture shop, Fifty/50, directly across from Grace Church. When I went up to their second level for the first time, I was overwhelmed by this particular view of Grace Church. I knew it well, but only from street level, as I passed it almost every day coming and going from my East Village studio and home. The owners agreed to let me paint this in situ, from the second floor… of their shop. I developed this over the course of more than a year, and was nearly done with it, when I added the figure, to give it a sense of scale. She was also a friend and posed for me in front of that window many times.
Ronald N. Sherr was an American artist and teacher (1952-2022), who began his art studies at the DuCret School of Art in New Jersey, then moved to New York City to study at the National Academy of Design. While Ron had an illustrious career in fine art portraiture, the selected works here on Singulart are from his personal painting and drawing collection, spanning his mature career, from the mid-1970s well into the 2000s.
