About this artwork
This is a “portrait” of my artist’s mannequin, Ottakar, whom I also used in Queen of Hearts. As he was my most patient and cooperative model, I did many drawings of him as well as this painting. I was fascinated that this inanimate object could embody such personality.
Ottakar, the mannequin, also has a rich history. He is French and dates from the late 18th Century. Although his features were likely modeled after those of Napolean, as far as… I know his creator’s identity is still a mystery.
Ottakar was passed on to me by a former painting teacher and dear friend, who likely acquired him in the 1930’s from another fellow artist (and fellow member of The Salmagundi Club in NYC).
In 2014, he was acquired by The Metropolitan Museum and went directly from my studio to The Met’s Paper Department, where he is much loved. He has participated in various Met shows in NYC and abroad, along with other artist’s mannequins.
