The inspiration for this work is a fifteenth century painting by Jean Fouquet ca. 1420 – 1477-81 known as Virgin and Child (Melun diptych). Fouquet’s is a striking portrait of the Madonna and Child surrounded by colorful “putti”. Though I have never been religious in any way, this particular image has always fascinated me. I decided to pose one of my antique artist’s mannequins around a model to try to create a similar effect. I also endeavored to… add an ethereal quality or other worldliness to the subject by using gold leaf and pastiglia in the background.
I worked on this painting over a period of about five years… it went through many, many changes and was eventually cut down on three sides to adjust the composition. It was begun shortly after I returned to my NYC studio from an extended stay in Florence, where my view was of Brunelleschi’s 15th Century High Renaissance building, known as the Hospital of the Innocents.
Ronald N. Sherr was an American artist and teacher (1952-2022), who began his art studies at the DuCret School of Art in New Jersey, then moved to New York City to study at the National Academy of Design. While Ron had an illustrious career in fine art portraiture, the selected works here on Singulart are from his personal painting and drawing collection, spanning his mature career, from the mid-1970s well into the 2000s.
