A painting moulded from a childish enthusiasm and a decrepit adult world view.
The anthropomorphism of the lion is intended to prompt an empathy for the animal. The alterations are subtle and instead focus on the similarities the human anatomy bears with others in the animal kingdom. A feeble hope perhaps to instill a comradery between us and other ‘Earthers’.
Although the painting references more contemporary styles of Art, notably Expressionism… and Pop art, it finds itself at home further back in history. The piece references ancient depictions of lions, where a limited knowledge was beautifully intertwined with fantasies of the mind. These interpretations elevate the creature, empowering it with further personality and status.
The waves and curls of the lion’s mane add an extravagance and vibrancy to the piece, offsetting the somewhat static pose of the animal. It also helps describe a bustling emotional state not necessarily found in the facial expression.

Rory Mitchell is an experienced Norwegian artist who has participated in exhibitions and residencies in Norway and the UK. He balances a largely satirical tone - explorations of political agendas and the aligned engagement of whole populations - with a countering search for tranquility outside of these concerns. Primarily working with oil on canvas, he produces figurative paintings that showcase rich colour palettes and possess Expressionist undertones.
