About this artwork
‘Sunset al dente’: a dusk that is deeply tangible. Undoubtedly an end of a day, but perhaps also an embodiment of the final chapter of a long life before it sinks below the horizon.
Despite the painting’s peculiarities, it describes a behaviour that may be familiar to all but a few of us. The piece chronicles an older man allowing himself a moment of youthful playfulness; some respite from the gravity of a daily routine. Away from the public eye… and conventions, people are neither elegant or beautified. They enact their instincts; they become a true definition of themselves.
The spaghetti is a joyful chaos. A miniature re-enactment of the bedlam of existence.
In the foreground a face can be found in the reflections of the spoons. The companion appears to stare, mouth agape in awe or bemusement. The composition of the painting is worked in a way so that the reflection could well be you, the viewer, if you wish to keep the man company.

« Creating art is a necessity in my life. It allows me to communicate in the fullest manner, not bound by stumbled words or misinterpretations. »
Rory Mitchell is an experienced Norwegian artist who has participated in exhibitions and residencies in Norway and the UK. He balances a largely satirical tone - explorations of political agendas and the aligned engagement of whole populations - with a countering search for tranquility outside of these concerns. Primarily working with oil on canvas, he produces figurative paintings that showcase rich colour palettes and possess Expressionist undertones.
