About this artwork
A man agitates the sea air in a surge of emotion.
His gesture could well be a fond farewell or a hearty hello. It could well even be a cry for help. It is this ambiguity that is a central theme in ‘The Big Wave’. The narrative is wondrously inexact. Where the man is heading or what he is doing we do not know: it may well be none of our business. We are onlookers upon an intimate moment.

« Creating art is a necessity in my life. It allows me to communicate in the fullest manner, not bound by stumbled words or misinterpretations. »
Rory Mitchell is an experienced Norwegian artist who has participated in exhibitions and residencies in Norway and the UK. He balances a largely satirical tone - explorations of political agendas and the aligned engagement of whole populations - with a countering search for tranquility outside of these concerns. Primarily working with oil on canvas, he produces figurative paintings that showcase rich colour palettes and possess Expressionist undertones.
