About this artwork
The painting is inspired by the story of Giulia Tofana: a witch and courtesan, forced into prostitution by her father at the age of thirteen. A strong and impulsive woman, she navigates the twists and turns of life with her head held high, never giving up, and relying on the patron saints of Palermo. The novel is also a denunciation of how much women have suffered at the hands of men and succumbed to them, whether commoners or great ladies, they… have never had a voice in the matter. Giulia will be their champion, selling Tofana water only to them to restore their freedom and dignity, since for them the only way to save themselves was widowhood. Accused and executed in 1659 for this, she confessed to killing—or aiding in the killing—over 600 men. The lethal potion was called Tofana Water: arsenic, belladonna, and lead were the main ingredients of a concoction about which nothing else is known.
Rosa Cacace, graduated in Fine Arts, explores acrylic art, embellishing the canvases with material elements. Drawing from stories and myths, her works fade between the figurative and the surreal aura, painting narratives that transfigure History into colors. The feelings she conveys are an emotional journey, where every detail evokes deep and studied interpretations.
