About this artwork
During Prehispanic times in Mesoamerica, animals like the jaguar were revered as special spiritual entities, like a god. I was inspired by the representation of the jaguar and the way is portrayed in the Prehispanic iconography. I have created a jungle like environment as a background using Photoshop. That imagery is printed on canvas. Then I use oil paint to define the abstracted jaguar figure.

Ruben Nieto was born in Veracruz, Mexico. He holds a BFA from the Universidad de Guanajuato and an MFA in Arts and Technology from The University of Texas at Dallas. Nieto has shown internationally in Switzerland, Germany, Spain, France, Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.
