About this artwork
When I began this piece, I didn’t start with a story, I started with a feeling, a quiet moment, a pause between thoughts. I laid down the abstract first: soft whites, pale blues, gentle greys, broken by deep blacks and bursts of orange. It wasn’t meant to describe a place, but to hold the atmosphere of a thought, the texture of a memory, a space where whispers and shadows mingle like autumn light. Into that world, I placed her, because she belonged… there. Her pose, her stillness, her presence felt right within the layered colours of the season. She sits with one leg drawn up, a mug resting in her hands. She isn’t looking at us, or even at the cat beside her, her gaze drifts beyond the frame, into a space only she can see. The cat, black and sleek, tilts its head toward her, as if asking: what are you looking at? For me, this painting is about that unspoken exchange, about stillness, curiosity, and autumn itself, a season of pause and reflection.
Saskia van Drunen (1971) is a Dutch artist whose process reveals an artist deeply engaged in the exploration of the inner emotional lives of her subjects, often capturing the quiet, vulnerable moments of women in a way that feels both personal and universal. Her technique combines careful figurative detail with abstracted, textured elements, creating a sense of timelessness and depth that resonates with viewers on an intimate level. Through her thoughtful use of colour, shape, and texture, she not only portrays beauty but also evokes the complexity of personal introspection, inviting viewers to find their own reflections within her work.
Saskia’s work is a burst of life and energy, and it invites the viewer to discover and connect with their own emotions.
