A hot August day opens in the garden. The hard workers are already on the move in the flower bed — whirling here, buzzing there. The air is filled with a rich, sweet perfume from the blossoms, intensified by the humidity. For me, this scene captures a quiet rural idyll and a moment suspended in warmth.
This work is created entirely on a glass panel and painted on both sides. It is one of my first pieces made using this technique, and I am very happy… with the result, despite its simplicity. The colors are especially captivating, and the cinematic warmth of the scene feels almost tangible, as if the scent of summer were present in the painting itself.
Painting the bumblebees and their soft, textured hairs was a particular pleasure. It required close observation of insect anatomy, and I found myself fully immersed in the process. I plan to continue exploring this technique and subject matter in future works.
Primarily an oil painter, Satu Helle's background in traditional art was tempered by her mother's influence. She expertly manipulates brush, knife, or her own fingers across unconventional surfaces like glass or metal, and an ever-evolving color scheme that breathes life into her works. Her work evokes the beauty and tranquility found in nature, aiming to instill these emotions into her viewers.
