About this artwork
The title of this picture follows that of the novel by Joseph Conrad (1857--1924) -- "heart of darkness" -- which is set in Africa, tormented by the slave trade, with a centrally acting individual as the heart of this darkness.
I conceived the image as a response to the increasingly severe threats to freedom and human dignity, where only a few individuals reveal their destructive attitude.
The deep dark green, square "heart" on Plexiglas floats… above and outside the canvas, the transparent part towers over the
other color lines. It can be perceived as a foreign body in a world that otherwise operates in a variety of extremes.
In the wider, more colorful environment, this conflict will -- hopefully -- be resolved.
