About this artwork
The Empire of Lights (originally L'Empire des Lumières), an oil painting, depicts a landscape consisting of a few elements: a small body of water in the foreground and a house with a large tree dominating the scene, with sky and vegetation in the background. Magritte divided the painting into two opposing scenarios: night and day. In the upper part of the painting, he painted a clear blue sky, crossed by numerous white clouds, while in the lower… part, the house, the hotel, and the lake are immersed in the pitch-black darkness of night. Despite its completely realistic and meticulous execution, the work produces a sense of astonishment in the viewer: the disorientation is due to the union of two elements, light and darkness, which, in reality, cannot coexist. The disorientating effect is accentuated by the contrast between the serene light of the sky and the artificial lights coming from inside the house. Homage to Magritte. 17-Mar-2023
Silvano Crespi is a painter with a background in Political Science and a deep passion for oil painting, born from his study of the great European masters of the 18th and 19th centuries. He uses a reflective, introspective, and post-Impressionist technique, characterized by broad areas of color, a focus on light and shadow, vibrant colors, and perspectives that evoke infinity. His works, imbued with natural landscapes and atmospheric influences, convey an intense emotion of silent contemplation, celebrating the fleeting nature of time and the eternal relationship between the individual and the universe.
