About this artwork
This painting, too, was inspired by my trip to Mexico. It alludes to the spiritual world of the Maya, where rituals, sacrifices, and symbols played a central role. These practices were an expression of a deep belief in cosmic order, in gods, cycles, and the fragile balance between life and death.
The figure depicted seems to already carry this knowledge within her – a silent premonition of change and downfall. There is something ineffable in her… gaze, as if she had already sensed through the magical rituals that a world was reaching its limit. The symbolic power of these practices was once ubiquitous; today it largely eludes our understanding.
The image is less a historical representation than an inner state: a memory of a time when spirituality, fear, hope, and sacrifice were inextricably linked.
