About this artwork
How do we understand our world? My children do it with pens and paper. They capture their surroundings with a clarity that fascinates me. When I observe them, I realize: My work is hardly different, even though my world has become more complex. This series arose from the intense connection I have with my children and the search for an equally radical, intuitive honesty.
I call the origin of my paintings the "inner landscape." It is a space that… is invisible but palpable. There, I am completely myself, without judgment. Turning this place outward requires courage. It is an act of exposure that transforms the painting into an invitation to enter this space.
Forms here don't emerge through construction, but through stillness. As in meditation, everything is allowed to be present. Only in relinquishing judgment does tranquility arise. Painting is my way of making life tangible.
Simon Thon studied at the Ruhr Academy of Fine Arts and subsequently worked in advertising before becoming a freelance photographer. His photographic work also maintains a clear artistic expression. Nevertheless, painting remains his true focus. In his studio, his work evolved from early figurative, realistic motifs to increasingly freer abstraction. He rejects the constraints of a single style and understands art as an open process. His painting thus becomes an intimate form of communication and, at the same time, an instrument for understanding the world and its current tensions. Social contradictions, frictions, and shifts act as underlying forces in his paintings, lending them both emotional and intellectual urgency.
