About this artwork
Somebody told me about another artist they knew who had been on the point selling a painting of fish to an Arab client only to lose the sale by starting to talk about Christianity. That put the idea of loaves and fishes, as recounted in the New Testament into my head. Once again Iluse an image of our oak table which I rotated to define a new quadrilateral pithing the pictorial space and placed three Roman style loaves in the corners where the table…
"touched" the edges of the canvas.Why Roman? Well I think that was a hangover from the story, a period detail. The fishes were a couple of mackerel which I have fished for off the rocks in Devon.Their lozenge shape echo the loaves and I put them on an imaginary basket, which is shaped like the woven baskets used by my mother when I was a boy. Then I added another lozenge shape, a lemon because I usually grill mackerel with sliced lemon inside them.
