About this artwork
This is a celebration of the way coffee asserted in the horn of Africa. The shape of the pot is common throughout, but this one, sitting on its little beaded cushion is a Sudanese one , of a type and colour I remember from my childhood there.
It sits on a striped carpet of the type I used to have by my bed; very coarse and scratchy and just using the natural colours of the animal fibres it was made from. There is an incense burner because the serving… of this type of coffee in tiny cups was always done with ceremony and ceremony in the Sudan seemed always to require the burins of incense.
One cup has just been poured and sits directly on the carpet. You can see the hand of the hostess offering you another cup while others and a bowl of sugar sit on a round metal tray.
