About this artwork
There is a large hay meadow I know surrounded by woods where I often go to watch the deer. They emerge from the woods quite unexpectedly because there is a small stream, known as a ghyll in Sussex which runs along one edge which means they can move between this field and the river Arun without being seen. I have climbed into the woods when there were no deer around and the descent is quite sharp.
So I imagined a pair of roe in the rut preparing… to come onto the field to feed and chase, just behind a screen of trees with sunlight catching their coats and dappling the ground.
