About this artwork
In this signature painting, I've explored the fluidity and mystery of reflection through a blend of oil sticks, oil glazes and underdrawing with charcoall. It's incredible when you stop and look both at the macro and the micro detail.... the sky reflected in the lake holding a mirror up to the nature surrounding it. Photographs with my phone are brought back to my desktop. I start to curate and crop and it's amazing how what I thought I was… looking at becomes something else altogether. My painting moves intuitively between figuration and abstraction, I enjoy the blurring of lines and the burying of marks in layers which emerge like undergrowth and the marks of the artist present. I'm alluding to my presence by my absence, something most people can relate to out in the landscape. How we impact our surroundings and how interconnected we are with all living things.
Skye Holland, Central St. Martins alumni and also art educator, skillfully engages oil, graphite, acrylic, pigment powders, and gold leaf to create mixed media paintings and drawings. Her intricate techniques, inspired by the experience of being in varying environments, moves intuitively between abstraction and figuration. Each layered mark introduce whispers of thought, emotion, memory and sometimes just pure energy. Artists and viewers alike find themselves immersed in Holland's poignant portrayal of a fragile world, stirred by her evocative representation of human impact and the unsettling beauty of impermanence.
"I paint from remembered landscapes I carry with me - and remembered feelings of them, which of course become transformed. I could certainly never mirror nature. I would like more to paint what it leaves me with" - Joan Mitchell
