About this artwork
In this work, I have depicted a creature that blends the real with the surreal, using vibrant colors and pop art forms to convey energy and mystery. It is a portrait of a platypus transformed into a metallic golden balloon, belonging to the Ascendants and Descendants series. This series takes the language of classical aristocratic portraiture and applies it to the fauna: each animal receives the same solemnity and anatomical study once reserved for… the nobility.
Worked on for over a month, the surface retains the textures from multiple tests of form and color. Acrylic on Belgian linen, Liquitex pigments. The edges are finished; the piece can be hung or displayed without a frame.
Sofía Cristina Jiménez, contemporary visual artist, Madrid. Her work in acrylic on Belgian linen explores the tension between the natural and the artificial through surrealism and visual poetry, in series such as Naturaleza Plástica, Ascendentes y Descendientes and Diorama de Historia Natural.
