About this artwork
In the hinterland of Cilento, where time passes more slowly, the Mingardo Gorge near Rofrano lies hidden like a secret that only the patient can discover.
There, the Mingardo River has carved its mark in stone. For millennia, it has whispered, urged, and shaped… I stand in the midst of this adventure, letting myself be enchanted by this nature, only glimpsing the secrets hidden behind the rocks. It is a solitary place that awakens all my artistic… senses. I used my pastels to share this moment with you, this moment of moss-green hues and sounds in the gorge. I created the deep effect of the gorge and the crystal-clear water surface with several layers of pastel, which I fixed between each layer (as with all my pastel works), allowing it to dry, thus preserving the brilliance of each application.

Sonja Kalmanfi is a painter who creates her art on canvas and paper using pastels, acrylics, watercolors, and mixed media. Her work is impressionistic and romantic, skillfully moving between realism and abstraction, masterfully capturing light, color, and moods. Her works convey a sensual melancholy and invite viewers to connect deeply with nature and their own inner selves at the threshold between dream and reality. She primarily uses the Cilento National Park in Italy as her setting and source of inspiration, where she spends time regularly. In her paintings, the landscapes of this country merge with the artist herself, her inner self, her experience. Sonja has a unique form of color perception. Behind every number, a color appears for her (e.g., 5 = midnight blue), a form of synesthesia in which sensory impressions merge. This intuitive perception shapes her artistic work.
