About this artwork
In this work entitled Bibliothèque Poétique – L'Encre du Temps, Sophie Dumont aptly continues her sensitive exploration of cultural memory through the refined form of the library. The oil on canvas, in a vertical format of 50 x 61 cm, offers a rhythmic composition, both structured and vibrant, where each book slice becomes a chromatic imprint of a silent narrative.
The painting's strength lies in its ability to suggest the passing of time without… ever freezing the moment. The thick, intricate layers—typical of the artist's technique—translate the weight of history, the density of knowledge, and the delicate wear of the reading gesture. Ochres, pale blues, off-whites, and deep blacks follow one another in nuanced harmony, evoking both the materiality of books and their symbolic significance.
« To sublimate, to appropriate the subject, to keep only the essential. »
Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964. She currently lives and works in Normandy. Her work, primarily oil on canvas, explores the memory of places through abstract landscapes, stylized libraries, and studio interiors. Through the layering of numerous paints and subtle collages, she constructs structured compositions where matter, light, and color interact. Her work is distinguished by a balance between architecture and pictorial sensibility. Exhibiting for over twenty years in France and internationally, notably in Germany, Canada, Belgium, and Italy, Sophie Dumont's work is now featured in numerous private and museum collections.
