About this artwork
In this oil painting, contemporary French artist Sophie Dumont explores the evocative power of abstract landscape. The composition is built around horizontal layers where deep blues, mineral greys and luminous ochre blend, evoking a distant horizon where sea, sky and land seem to meet.
The paint, applied in successive layers and with light scraping, gives the surface a richness of textures and nuances. The central ochre band acts as a line of light… traversing the composition, creating a balance between depth and luminosity.
Without depicting an identifiable landscape, the work suggests the memory of a horizon and the trace of time in matter. Through these layers of paint, Sophie Dumont transforms the landscape into a contemplative experience where light, texture, and color engage in a silent dialogue.

« To sublimate, to appropriate the subject, to keep only the essential. »
Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964. She currently lives and works in Normandy. Her work, primarily oil on canvas, explores the memory of places through abstract landscapes, stylized libraries, and studio interiors. Through the layering of numerous paints and subtle collages, she constructs structured compositions where matter, light, and color interact. Her work is distinguished by a balance between architecture and pictorial sensibility. Exhibiting for over twenty years in France and internationally, notably in Germany, Canada, Belgium, and Italy, Sophie Dumont's work is now featured in numerous private and museum collections.
