About this artwork
Traces deploys a subtle layering of sky, horizon, and ground, in an earthy and nuanced palette. The work seems sculpted from the memory of the landscape, as if each pictorial layer carried within it an ancient imprint.
In the lower band, a deep ochre red, the artist introduces a discreet collage, integrated into the material. This textured fragment evokes sediments, geological strata, or perhaps the invisible scars of a landscape traversed by time.… The confrontation between the density of the collage and the fluidity of the sky's glazes creates a poetic balance between anchoring and lightness.
Traces thus becomes a work about what remains—what resists erasure—in matter as well as in memory. A silent tension runs through the canvas, between abstraction and reminiscence.

Sophie Dumont is a contemporary French painter born in Paris in 1964. She currently lives and works in Normandy. Her work, primarily oil on canvas, explores the memory of places through abstract landscapes, stylized libraries, and studio interiors. Through the layering of numerous paints and subtle collages, she constructs structured compositions where matter, light, and color interact. Her work is distinguished by a balance between architecture and pictorial sensibility. Exhibiting for over twenty years in France and internationally, notably in Germany, Canada, Belgium, and Italy, Sophie Dumont's work is now featured in numerous private and museum collections.
