About this artwork
Offset carries within it a tension that never resolves. The forms seem to shift against one another without ever truly separating – as if something is being held back rather than released. Weight moves across the surface, shifts, and accumulates anew, never settling into a state of rest.
The composition remains closed. Movement is perceptible, but interrupted. Lines bend, surfaces press inwards, transitions appear restrained. Nothing strives outwards;… everything remains close, condensed, slightly displaced. It is precisely in this that a quiet, sustained intensity arises.
The surface is built up layer by layer. Muted reds, browns, and flesh tones overlap, are softened, and then repeated. Previous decisions remain visible, lending the image a physical depth – not smooth, but organically grown.
Offset is not a moment of resolution, but a state of holding.
Sophie Lehniger works primarily with acrylics and oil pastels on untreated canvas, drawing on her background in law and art history for her artistic practice. Using techniques such as layering, condensation, and reduction, she develops abstract forms characterized by repetition, variation, and visible traces of manual intervention. Her works radiate a profound tranquility and inner tension, inviting viewers to experience moments of pause and focused perception without offering a definitive resolution.
