About this artwork
The painting depicts a monumental stage dominating the entire pictorial space. In the background rise large windows and imposing organ pipes, evoking associations with a sacred space. In the foreground, a dense crowd of orchestra and choir merges into an almost unified mass. The individual figures recede into the background in favor of the collective.
This combination of architectural grandeur and dense crowd gives the image an overwhelming, almost… oppressive effect. The title, "Majesty and Bounty," reinforces this impression of sublimity and abundance, drawing attention to aspects of power, grandeur, and devotion. At the same time, the submissive posture of the crowd can be interpreted as an expression of collective submission, thus evoking not only admiration but also ambivalence toward the pathos depicted.
Stefan Görres is a painter, photographer, and digital artist; he uses digital painting based on photographs to artistically explore the mutability of our perception. His technique combines traditional painting with digital innovation, distorting everyday motifs and lighting situations and transforming them into new, surreal realities. His works play with illusion and reality and powerfully convey the emotion of constant change: "Nothing is as it was."
