About this artwork
Downstairs unfolds as a study of perception at the boundary between reality and abstraction. A downward-spiraling staircase forms the central motif, yet its legibility eludes immediate clarity: white on white merges architecture with space, surface with emptiness. The contours are reduced, almost erased.
Only upon closer inspection do fragile traces of a red railing become visible. These barely tangible fragments seem like remnants of memory. The… red breaks the monochrome stillness and acts as a quiet anchor in the pictorial space, without, however, jeopardizing the dominance of the white.
The work exists in a tension between photographic documentation and painterly gesture. It questions the reliability of visual information and invites the viewer to slow down their gaze. What initially appears to be an empty surface reveals itself as a multi-layered space in which light, form, and perception are intertwined.
Stefan Görres is a painter, photographer, and digital artist; he uses digital painting based on photographs to artistically explore the mutability of our perception. His technique combines traditional painting with digital innovation, distorting everyday motifs and lighting situations and transforming them into new, surreal realities. His works play with illusion and reality and powerfully convey the emotion of constant change: "Nothing is as it was."
