About this artwork
The work is inspired by the famous Canticle of the Creatures composed by Saint Francis around 1124. The jute canvas evokes the saint's habit, his choice of extreme poverty. Intertwining of colored flows evoke praises to God, with all his creatures: yellow is the artist's praise for brother sun, for sister moon; the light blue and the white are for sister water, the sky; green and brown for sister mother earth; black for sister death. Some coins are… scattered on the black flow, evoking the sin of material wealth; however, they are hit by gold colored lashes, symbol of Francis' radical choice to strip himself of any material beneficiary. This is the artist's invitation to rediscover a feeling of brotherhood with creation, in a society increasingly based on the accumulation of material goods and individualism; an invitation to shed false riches and seek happiness of the spirit in love and harmony with mother nature and every creature.
« My art is a mirror of contemporary man: the deeper one looks, the more consciousness is stirred. This is where beauty comes from. »
