About this artwork
The silence is deafening. Where once the hum of machinery filled the air, now only the rustle of pigeons’ wings and the skitter of mice break the stillness.
How does it feel to walk through an abandoned complex that once fueled a community's economy and agriculture? What happens when a symbol of a productive past and progress becomes a symbol of neglect?
Βuilt by Stavros Economou, a leading figure of Cypriot Modernism, is now left to rot.
The contrast… is stark: ΣΟΠΑΖ - SOPAZ (The Cooperative Food Production Organisation), established in 1961 as a vibrant hub of animal feed production, closed down in 2015 after a fire. A lifeless industrial landscape.
This series was created when I was invited by the curatorial team of the first retrospective exhibition, "Past-forward: Stavros Economou Unarchived," at "SPEL," the State Gallery of Contemporary Art in Nicosia, Cyprus. The photos were also projected when the exhibition moved to Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation in Marseille
