This artwork began with a mirror I found abandoned on the street: broken, worn, yet strangely beautiful. Instead of seeing damage, I saw a story waiting to emerge. I brought the mirror home and transformed it into a reflection about identity and transformation.
At the center, a young woman is captured in the moment of removing a mask. Around her float many other masks, symbolizing the roles we adopt throughout life, the identities we perform for… society, for others, and sometimes even for ourselves. The act of unmasking represents the courage to reconnect with one’s true self.
The mirror’s fractures were intentionally preserved. Inspired by the Japanese philosophy of Kintsugi, I filled the broken openings with gold, celebrating imperfection and healing. Golden butterflies emerge from these cracks, symbolizing transformation, rebirth, and the beauty that can arise from what was once broken.
