About this artwork
An original artwork on Bockingford watercolour paper 90lbs. In portrait format.
I got the idea to do this picture while the UK was still under covid lockdown. Although things were easing, it was still not much fun getting around and trying to socialise with people. I thought then, that it would be doubtful if the political elite, were as compliant as the general population.
I do not recall, at the time if any of the aforementioned elite had stepped… out of line, but Ed Davey a UK member of parliament, and now the head of the Liberal Democrats, was chosen as the subject . He looks directly at You, the viewer, "See what I can do!"
It is a fun picture that has a lot of depth and mix of surreal, abstract and comic.

I, Stephen Alpe, a self-taught watercolourist, started painting in watercolours back in 1986. Impressed by the artwork in ornithological books illustrated by artits such as David Reid-Henry. I strived to achieve the same level of excellence, but, where as, Reid Henry made it look like the subjects were about to fly off the page, my initial efforts looked like they had been carved out of stone!
I did, in time improve and was able to illustrate a few calendars and magazines.
On moving to the UK in 2007, I moved into painting landscapes and news items that caught my imagination. From 2012, I began to notice the works of the street artist Banksy. Other artists that I admire include Wassily Kadinski, Joan Miro and Pol Ledent.
