About this artwork
An original watercolour picture on Bockingford Watercolour paper, 140lbs. This picture was completed on 23.05.2020.
A quick look and it could be Masai Mara, Kenya, or Serengetti, Tanzania.
But wait...the rhino has fur, it is wholly. The bovines grazing in the distance to the right, are Steppe Bison, not Wildebeeste. The scene is bright and sunny, but there are still pockets of snow and ice. This could have been Britain, 20,000 years ago, when it… was still connected to Europe. Mega fauna abounded, with huge herds of Tarpan or wild horse, Wholly Mammoth, Reindeer or Caribou, and Steppe Bison. Predators had a lot to choose from, and these included both Cave & Eurasian Lions,
Spotted & Striped Hyaenas and Wolves. It gave Africa a run for it's money.

I, Stephen Alpe, a self-taught watercolourist, started painting in watercolours back in 1986. Impressed by the artwork in ornithological books illustrated by artits such as David Reid-Henry. I strived to achieve the same level of excellence, but, where as, Reid Henry made it look like the subjects were about to fly off the page, my initial efforts looked like they had been carved out of stone!
I did, in time improve and was able to illustrate a few calendars and magazines.
On moving to the UK in 2007, I moved into painting landscapes and news items that caught my imagination. From 2012, I began to notice the works of the street artist Banksy. Other artists that I admire include Wassily Kadinski, Joan Miro and Pol Ledent.
