About this artwork
This painting explores the symbolism of transformation, weaving together mythological, neurological, and astrological narratives to depict the journey from fear to enlightenment. Drawing from Medusa’s serpentine legacy and the Hero’s Journey, the composition visualizes the brain’s basal ganglia as a guardian serpent encircling the thalamus—the gateway to conscious awareness. Its tail, the amygdala, echoes the South Node in astrology, embodying trauma… and conditioned fear responses, while its head, the caudate nucleus, mirrors the North Node, representing desire, ambition, and the pursuit of higher knowledge. The serpent’s form becomes both a literal and metaphorical barrier to inner vision, reflecting how preconditioned responses to threat limit our perception. Through layered symbolism and hieroglyphic-like imagery, the painting invites viewers to confront and transcend these internal guardians, reclaiming feminine power and expanding consciousness toward wisdom and transformation.
Stephen Linsteadt expresses transformative themes on canvas through oil. His approach involves intentional brushstrokes, mindful of color, pattern and surprises in creation. His works act as bridges, balancing between conscious and unconscious realms, reflecting a deeply spiritual, introspective dialogue.
