About this artwork
Inspired by Spinoza's ladder of understanding and Brazilian concepts and images of Legba's staff—both messengers of metamorphosis—this painting explores the passage between states of consciousness through a vibrant, symmetrical tapestry of ornamental and floral motifs. The central axis evokes Legba’s staff as a spiritual conduit, while the layered patterns mirror Spinoza’s ascent from imagination to intuitive knowledge. Bright hues and rhythmic textures… channel emotional resonance, and bold, dark strokes interrupt the harmony to suggest rupture, revelation, and the necessity of transformation. The work becomes both a visual ritual and a metaphysical map, honoring the intermediaries who guide us through thresholds of becoming.
Stephen Linsteadt expresses transformative themes on canvas through oil. His approach involves intentional brushstrokes, mindful of color, pattern and surprises in creation. His works act as bridges, balancing between conscious and unconscious realms, reflecting a deeply spiritual, introspective dialogue.
