About this artwork
Passiflora edulis, commonly known as passion fruit, is a vine species of passion flower native to southern Brazil with such a complicated multi armed structure that it could be the inspiration for a mad director's vision of a wacky space station in a popular sci-fi film starring Emily Blunt and Chris Hemsworth. Orchids, tulips and roses comprise petals in various conventional shapes, shielding boringly uncomplicated centres, but the passion flower…
has so much going on inside the petals to give your average bee a heart attack with the excitement of it all. Now cultivated in tropical and sub tropical areas the passion flower originated in Brazil and derived its name from the explanations of missionaries converting indigenous inhabitants to Christianity. Its name was flor das cinco chagas or "flower of the five wounds" illustrating the crucifixion of Christ, with other plant components also named after an emblem in the Passion of Jesus. Wowser! Van Gogh's sunflowers eat your heart out.

Steve White, a painter based in the Netherlands, has extensively exhibited his works nationally, as well as in the United Kingdom. While he appreciates that art can stir emotions and have great meaning for people, he has a more practical approach to creation. For example, one of the tests he does for his own works is simple - he asks himself, "Would this look good over someone's sofa?". White's abstract realist compositions also combine elements of minimalism.
