About this artwork
Renowned American artist Chuck Close (1940-2021) - who suffered a spinal seizure aged 48, and was forced to paint from a wheelchair with a brush strapped to his arm, meaning his painting style metamorphosed from extreme hyper-realism to ultra broad brush - once said this: 'Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work.' Art can be a long, tedious slog. You wouldn't know this if you scan clips on Instagram where paint… is being flung, swept, blown, sucked, scraped, sprayed, rolled, heated, dripped, flipped, taped, boiled, washed, pan-fried (joke) and even occasionally applied with a brush. It looks like more fun than children's TV. Beavering away in his freezing attic this artist pondered Close's maxim: these houses took almost as long to paint as they probably did to build. One window was a whole days work, the brickwork took forever. Andy Warhol seems to agree with Chuck: 'Why do people thinks artists are so special, it's just another job.'

Steve White, a painter based in the Netherlands, has extensively exhibited his works nationally, as well as in the United Kingdom. While he appreciates that art can stir emotions and have great meaning for people, he has a more practical approach to creation. For example, one of the tests he does for his own works is simple - he asks himself, "Would this look good over someone's sofa?". White's abstract realist compositions also combine elements of minimalism.
