About this artwork
The painting shows a large dominant fish. The colors are vivid and the fish is prominent towards a darker background. Everything is painted with a spatula in a multi-layered technique, up to twenty layers of paint, with liquid glass paint on linen. Using various powder pigments as well as gold leaves, beautiful shades of color were created. Stjepko Mamic is an established Croatian painter who has exhibited his work internationally, including in Japan, France, Italy and the United States. He previously led a successful career as a sea captain, and the ocean therefore features centrally in his art. He draws on the strength, vastness and depth of the sea to compose immersive, shimmering paintings full of color and spirit.
