Highlands is a vertical townscape inspired by Highlands, North Carolina, a mountain village I hold dear. From a bird’s-eye perspective, the town’s buildings tilt and interlock like a mosaic, each rendered in a distinct, unexpected hue. Behind them, layered hills of green are built from repeating, overlapping arcs, creating a rhythmic counterpoint to the angular roofs below.
My work balances observation with abstraction. Perspective is intentionally… compressed, shadows are simplified into blocks of color, and the palette is orchestrated rather than descriptive. A muted gray sky and street give the saturated architecture room to resonate, while small details (a woman in an orange dress at the corner, a pedestrian in a striped shirt, a scattering of blue birds) animate the scene with quiet narrative.
The result is a contemporary portrait of place that invites slow looking, rewarding the viewer with new relationships of color and form each time.
