About this artwork
As I drove by Davenport, I saw a man sitting in front of Arro’s Market, who looked down on his luck. I stopped and asked him if I could paint him.
At the moment of capturing this scene, the sun made a streak of light, adding to the impression of a better day to come for him.
"Arro's Market" is an evocative acrylic painting that explores my personal connection to the small town of Davenport, CA.
Measuring 9 inches wide by 11 inches high, this piece… portrays a bright day outside a rustic market and liquor store, embodying the spirit of everyday life on a secluded corner where countless memories were made. This artwork exudes a timeless charm, drawing in those who treasure nostalgia and the stories woven into familiar settings along life’s journey. I've been told that "through meticulous brushwork and heartfelt composition, "Arro's Market" becomes more than a moment in Americana; it’s an invitation to pause and appreciate the beauty in everyday scenes and the enduring human spirit."
Ohio-born Susan Brown grew up with European parents, who introduced her to art at an early age. She won a state-wide award at age twelve. After retiring in 2016 from a career in technology/bio-tech, Brown devoted herself to her painting career. Highlights include invitation to the Florence Biennial 2025, Artist Residency, Vallauris, France, 2022, American Women Artist Award, 2023, Important World Artists VI (one of 10 artists sponsored to be in the 2024 volume VI), and Exhibizone solo exhibition, November 2025—January 2026. Her painting, "Davenport Evening" was featured in the San Diego Museum of Art, Nov. 2024 through March 2025
Susan Brown’s background as a watercolor artist provided her the experience in use of light, shadow and negative space, and how to maintain freshness in her painting. Her work is shown in galleries, juried exhibitions and in private collections. She teaches through the Santa Cruz Art League and at Ghost Ranch, NM.
