About this artwork
Davenport, California is a small town that I have loved for many years, including the Road House, a former stage coach stop, now a Bistro and Hotel.
I painted this evening view as one drives on Highway #1 N, going through the CA coastal town of Davenport; the arrow is a metaphor—
where are you going next?
In this painting, I explored the fluidity and depth of impressionism to portray the play of sunlight casting shadows and illuminating parts of… the road and the hillside. This piece represents moments of stillness within daily life, urging viewers to find beauty in the mundane and the calmness of a less-traveled road. This artwork will surely bring a moment of tranquility and reflection to any room.
"Davenport Evening" has won a number of awards, is in juried exhibitions, including as the poster for the Pacific Art League’s (Palo Alto) 99th year Celebration, and currently in the San Diego Museum of Art.
Ohio-born Susan Brown grew up with European parents, who introduced her to art at an early age. She won a state-wide award at age twelve. After retiring in 2016 from a career in technology/bio-tech, Brown devoted herself to her painting career. Highlights include invitation to the Florence Biennial 2025, Artist Residency, Vallauris, France, 2022, American Women Artist Award, 2023, Important World Artists VI (one of 10 artists sponsored to be in the 2024 volume VI), and Exhibizone solo exhibition, November 2025—January 2026. Her painting, "Davenport Evening" was featured in the San Diego Museum of Art, Nov. 2024 through March 2025
Susan Brown’s background as a watercolor artist provided her the experience in use of light, shadow and negative space, and how to maintain freshness in her painting. Her work is shown in galleries, juried exhibitions and in private collections. She teaches through the Santa Cruz Art League and at Ghost Ranch, NM.
