About this artwork
This portrait painting is a tribute to an inspiring individual I had the privilege of meeting during my artist's residency in France in 2022.
"Leonie I" is a powerful depiction of a woman with a confident yet sorrowful expression. Her eyes reflect deep contemplation, hinting at a past filled with both strength and sadness. (She had escaped from an abusive marriage she was forced into at 16 years old. )
Draped in a textured white headscarf that… radiates elegance and grace, I wanted to paint her and let viewers into her world through her soulful gaze.
I captured the play of light and shadow on the subject's face, creating a lifelike quality that speaks volumes about her character.
The intricate beaded braids trailing around her neck add a dynamic element to the composition, further enhancing the subject's presence.
Utilizing a minimalist background and a soft, monochromatic palette, I sought to direct attention to the subject's face and emotional depth.

Ohio-born Susan Brown grew up with European parents, who introduced her to art at an early age. She won a state-wide award at age twelve.
After retiring in 2016 from a career in technology/bio-tech, Brown devoted herself to her painting career.
Highlights include invitation to the Florence Biennial 2025, Artist Residency, Vallauris, France, 2022, American Women Artist Award, 2023, Important World Artists VI (one of 10 artists sponsored to be in the 2024 volume VI), and Exhibizone solo exhibition, November 2025—January 2026. Her painting, "Davenport Evening" was featured in the San Diego Museum of Art, Nov. 2024 through March 2025
Susan Brown’s background as a watercolor artist provided her the experience in use of light, shadow and negative space, and how to maintain freshness in her painting. Her work is shown in galleries, juried exhibitions and in private collections.
She teaches through the Santa Cruz Art League and at Ghost Ranch, NM.
