About this artwork
I painted “Return” after arriving back at my island home in Greece. It wasn’t about painting the island itself, but about that feeling of returning to a place that settles something inside you. As I worked, layers of colour and marks slowly found their own rhythm, holding both the familiarity of home and the excitement of beginning again.

Susan Greeff is a South African contemporary abstract artist whose paintings explore memory, embodiment and emotional landscapes through layered gesture, colour and atmosphere. While her background as a psychiatric nurse and midwife continues to inform her sensitivity to the human condition, her current work has moved beyond biography to explore the universal language of emotion, presence and transformation. Through translucent layers, restrained colour palettes and expressive mark-making, Greeff’s paintings evoke a sense of stillness, ambiguity and connection. Rather than depicting specific places or events, they create emotional landscapes that allow each viewer to bring their own memories and interpretations to the work.
