About this artwork
This work evokes Thalia, muse of comedy and bucolic poetry, through her most characteristic attribute: the theatrical mask. The composition, centered on the hand holding the fictional face, shifts attention from the full figure to the symbol, as a metaphor for representation, laughter, and artifice.
The contrast between the intense reds of the fabric and the paleness of the mask highlights the tension between the human and the theatrical, between… what is hidden and what is revealed. The gestural and expressive brushwork conveys movement, as if the work captures the moment before the curtain rises.
Conceptually, the piece reflects on the duality between identity and the role we play, reminding us that comedy, beyond its lightheartedness, is also a critical reflection of the human condition.
