About this artwork
This landscape painting resembles a vision of the Eifel region in a state of emergency, somewhere between reality and a possible future scenario. Grainy, sandy textures lie within the layers of paint, as if the ground were roughened, parched, and scarred by heat. Here and there, glimpses of green still appear, like last islands of vegetation clinging to life against the inevitable.
Scattered across the landscape are small, smoldering fires. They… are not loud, but eerily quiet: tiny red and orange dots that seem to eat their way into the scene. Thin plumes of smoke, gray to blackish, rise from them, dissipating into the air and drawing the eye upward.
In the center and background, the true inferno unfolds: a blazing sea of red, orange, and yellow, resembling lava or a raging fire. The Eifel region appears only as a suggestion, its characteristic hilly shapes faintly visible.
