About this artwork
This image captures the moment in 1991 when I saw the glowing lava as it met the sea. Like a liquid stream of light, it surged over and under the solidified, black coastline. Where the fire touched the water, dense steam rose, white and heavy, as if the earth itself were exhaling. The surface was rough and porous, freshly cooled, full of cracks and crusts. A stretch of coastline not made of sand, but of newly born, dark matter.
The scene is inspired… by the lava flow of the Kīlauea eruption in Hawaii, which flowed into the sea in several places in 1990 and did not stop until 2018.
The work tells of the raw violence and, at the same time, the fascination that such natural spectacles inspire. It depicts destruction and creation in the same breath. Heat, steam, stone. A moment in which one feels how small humankind is and how immense the forces that shape our world are.
