About this artwork
Women in war are seen through patriarchal lenses as passive victims. In reality, many women fight in different ways and protect their children and other people. Women suffer in war because the general state of chaos "allows" ethics to be forgotten and violence to become a normal part of everyday life.
The picture shows an African woman with a child, as an allusion to images of the Madonna, but she has a weapon. She protects her child and herself,… and does not fit with the stereotype of passive women in war. Mothers are warriors!
