About this artwork
This young man is someone else I met and had a strong desire to paint. Things don’t always go as planned in the studio, but sometimes a chance encounter brings unexpected inspiration. I met him at a party—just a brief conversation, but something about his thoughtful presence stayed with me, and painting him was a way to capture that real, unguarded moment.
Unlike my ‘Grace N’ Grit’ series, which is all about imagined, symbolic women, this piece… is rooted in real life. I wanted to show the quiet strength and sensitivity I saw in him—the way he looked away, lost in thought, but still very much present. The vivid green background and bold red scarf are there to highlight his individuality, but it’s the small details—the tilt of his head, the softness around his eyes—that I hope tell the real story.
Tessa Thonett, an accomplished painter with a rich, international background and formal training at Chelsea School of Art, primarily works in oils, using both brushes and palette knives. Her vibrant technique blends textured impasto, flowing forms, and bold colour relationships, often stylized to emphasize emotion over realism. Her imaginary portraits of strong women in her "Grace n' Grit" series, explore the dynamic interplay of vulnerability and strength, conveying a profound celebration of resilience, introspection, and the quiet power within femininity.
Tessa principally paints portraits, both commissioned and for her enjoyment, as she has always been fascinated by faces and people, wishing to portray their spirit or 'essence' in her paintings of them. Her portraits, with their vibrant colors and textured brushwork, are testaments to her belief that a portrait should capture more than just a likeness; it should reveal the inner light and unique character of the subject."
