About this artwork
I mainly paint commissioned portraits, but also when I have time I paint portraits for fun - because something about the character of the person draws me in and makes me want to express them in my way. This chap was a very interesting man who takes middle aged people for wild adventures, either through the Sahara Desert in a VW or all kinds of other mad things he invents. That is so contrary to my nature, I found it really interesting, hence the… painting!
I painted it with palette knives and framed it with a bespoke frame, made from wood we found while living in Cameroon. We loved the marks that the chainsaws made in the hardwood, so bought some and brought it home to the UK - enough to make 4 frames. Painted black, with a touch of genuine gold leaf, it is a very special frame.
Tessa Thonett, an accomplished painter with a rich, international background and formal training at Chelsea School of Art, primarily works in oils, using both brushes and palette knives. Her vibrant technique blends textured impasto, flowing forms, and bold colour relationships, often stylized to emphasize emotion over realism. Her imaginary portraits of strong women in her "Grace n' Grit" series, explore the dynamic interplay of vulnerability and strength, conveying a profound celebration of resilience, introspection, and the quiet power within femininity.
Tessa principally paints portraits, both commissioned and for her enjoyment, as she has always been fascinated by faces and people, wishing to portray their spirit or 'essence' in her paintings of them. Her portraits, with their vibrant colors and textured brushwork, are testaments to her belief that a portrait should capture more than just a likeness; it should reveal the inner light and unique character of the subject."
