About this artwork
The Roman Ionic column is arguably one of the most immediately recognisable styles in the architectural world.
Simple, yet elegant, this column has proven itself to be able to stand the time; over the centuries, architects across the Western world have incorporated it into their architectural projects since the ancient Rome all the way to the Neo-Classical period, and can even be found in some 20th Century buildings.
This inkwash rendering was… my way honouring such a timeless piece of history. I researched the schematics of James Gibbs and Vignola to construct the geometry of the capital. Shadows were then cast by projecting lines at 45 degree angles.
Finally, the ink was lightly applied in layers; pale at first, and then gradually applied darker until the desired result was achieved.

Thomas Glenn, trained in Fine Art and classical oil painting, has excelled in teaching academic drawing. Using the techniques of Academic Realism, similar to artists like Jean Leon Gerome, Glenn captures the complexity of form through mastering colour composition. Imbued with a fascination for ancient history, his work echoes the inevitable cycle of societal downfall, eliciting reflections upon the transience of empires.
